Whakapapa of Whales

Hand carved wall sculpture by Karen Walters
Rimu, stain, oil, wax
In Maori mythology, whales are the descendents of Tangaroa, the god of the oceans. They are thought to possess a tapu, significant to Maori as both supernatural beings and as representatives of personal change and growth. When whales appeared on long journeys by waka across the pacific ocean, they were seen by Maori as a sign that the iwi should settle in a particular place. I have sculpted 5 whale forms into a perfect circle to symbolise the beauty of a constant journey and the ever seeking need for change and spiritual growth, a symbolic star appears in the empty white space of the circle as a reference to navigation and guidance.
