New Zealand born Shane “spud” Dudley draws on his Pakeha and Maori background, with many pieces highlighting the mana of the ‘real’ object. He blends his background of a signwriter and specialist concrete finisher, which he did for many years living in Australia, with his story telling of his cultural background. Now a Warkworth resident, he also draws on the rich culture and heritage of the area – often bringing Kawau Copper or boat building into his designs. The clever use of concrete, instead of stone, allows the pieces to be hung. So while giving the impression of stone or Greenstone, they are significant in stature and in visual appeal, such as stone, but practical to hang.
