We Love…
Sue Dasler tinkers in away in her beautiful studio in a now trendy spot in Wellington, like she has for many years. She is an institution, knowing forms, glazes and shapes like the other masters in the game - and now with a nod to the 70s a slight retro look is becoming to introduce to our collection at Artform. Welcome Sue. ARTFORM.

Sue's work is the epitome of New Zealand work in clay...the colours, the textures, the balance of form & function.....very New Zealand. As much as you can imagine her stunning seashore bowls for servings of delicious salads on a table setting by the sea, the sculptural birds equally transport you to the seashore and the birdlife around us. All work is wheel thrown with form and function as the primary focus. Sue's inspirations come from the functionality of simple forms, patterns from our environment and culture, the immediacy of making from throwing on the wheel and the intimate relationships we developed with the domestic ware in our homes. Sue has been working in Lyall Bay for the past three years and based in her current studio for the last two. Her domestic ware pottery range has been going for 15 years now. "People find it interesting as it's a rare thing to have a potter, producing handmade crafts and making a full time living out of it." Growing up in Kaikoura, the decision to work from Lyall Bay was largely driven by the environment. The sandblasted coastal appeal was a good fit for Sue who admits she's "never really lived in a big city, not that Wellingtons very big, but I really love being by the coast.... I basically wanted to be out of the city, I didn't really want the noise and the buzz of that. I liked the idea of being able to go out to the beach each day to work, being able to walk the dog or bike round the bay on nice days and be back in the studio within half an hour".
